Description
Prewriting skills are the foundational skills that a child must master before being ready or able to learn how to form letters or numbers. No matter your student/child’s age, start where they are now and continue to move forward with each successful mastery. The typical developmental sequence of drawing/forming prewriting lines & shapes is as follows:
- Vertical Lines by 2 years of age
- Horizontal Lines by 2.5 years of age
- Circles by 3 years of age
- Crosses by 3.5 – 4 years of age
- Squares by 4 years of age
- Diagonal Lines by 4.5 years of age
- X’s by 5 years of age
This workbook provides 56 pages that address each of these prewriting lines and shapes with varying amounts of visual cues, depending on your child(ren)’s needs.
As a school-based occupational therapist, I provide a list of drawing tips at the beginning of the prewriting packet to ensure the child(ren) you work with develop a correct pencil grasp and proper positioning habits that will support the development of their visual motor skills, hand strength, and writing stamina.
TIP: On the pages where there are two of a single shape, I recommend either 1) demonstrating the use of the worksheet for the child with the top shape and having the child replicate with their effort on the bottom shape OR 2) folding the paper in between the two shapes so that the child can focus on one shape at a time.
This 56-page packet features a butterfly theme. In my experience in working with preschoolers, their worksheets must be engaging in order to optimize their attention to a given task. I enjoyed regularly making new worksheets according to the given season /holiday, and now I’m sharing those with you! I hope that you have as much fun with them as I have!
ENJOY! Please provide me with your feedback.
