Prewriting skills are the foundational skills that a child must master before they’re able to form letters or numbers. No matter your student/child’s age, start where they are now and continue to move forward with each successful mastery. The typical developmental sequence of drawing/forming prewriting lines & shapes is as follows:

1. Vertical Lines by 2 years of age:

This product includes 36 worksheets that address the prewriting skill of drawing diagonal lines. I provide varyings levels of visual cues throughout to progress your student or child’s skill level.

I provide a note of OT expertise at the beginning of the prewriting packet to ensure the children/students you work with develop a correct pencil grasp and proper positioning habits that will support the development of their visual motor skills, hand strength, and writing stamina.

I advise that these skills should be worked on in progression. A child who has not yet mastered drawing diagonal lines in isolation, should not attempt the fun activities at the end of the packet until they have done so.

Also, students should master the precursor skills of drawing vertical lines, horizontal lines, circles, crosses, and squares before attempting diagonal lines.
