A Note on Prewriting Skills:

Drawing vertical and horizontal lines are considered “prewriting skills.” Prewriting skills are the foundational skills that a child must master before they’re able to form letters or numbers. No matter your student/child’s age, start where they are now and continue to move forward with each successful mastery. The typical developmental sequence of drawing/forming prewriting lines & shapes is as follows:

1. Vertical Lines by 2 years of age:
2. Horizontal Lines by 2.5 years of age
3. Circles by 3 years of age
4. Crosses by 3.5 years of age
5. Squares by 4 years of age
6. Diagonal Lines by 4.5 years of age
7. X’s by 5 years of age
