Description
After learning that a student’s requests for a “sensory break” were being followed up by a “hang out” session in a different classroom, I put everything else on hold to create a comprehensive, 10-page packet of sensory break options that is organized by sensory type: Oral Motor, Proprioceptive, Tactile, Visual, Vestibular – AND, there’s even a Cognitive/Social-Emotional category! After creating it, I highlighted / noted the activities from which the student would most benefit and provided it to the team. After receiving many requests, it’s now available for you!
OTs – By having this checklist on hand, you no longer have to sit and run through all the ideas you have in your head… hoping you don’t miss something. You’re able to spend your time and cognitive energy more efficiently by running through these already-written-down ideas, and simply checkmark the ones that are most applicable to your student’s needs!
- The first page includes a note that defines the differences between a “sensory break” and a “sensory diet.” This page is purposefully included within the packet as a mode of parent/staff education. Your parents/staff can reference it, upon receiving the completed packet of your personalized notes/checkmarks!
Teachers/Parents – If you have a child or student with sensory processing differences, take this checklist to their occupational therapist (OT) for them to indicate the activities that would best benefit your child, based on their unique needs.
